Brickley’s Ice Cream

Brickley’s Ice Cream is a Rhode Island staple located in Wakefield, Rhode Island. As a seasonal business, Brickley’s relies on the return of warm weather to spring their business into high gear.

In March of 2020, the spring season arrived with an unwelcome visitor. Snowy weather in New England in March and April (sometimes even May!) is nothing new. And Brickley’s loyal customer base is largely unphased by any hindrance that could stop them from getting their favorite treat. But the COVID-19 Crisis challenged all common logic; even the most established businesses struggled to find the right balance between safety and productivity. How does a business that is used to a line of 50 hungry customers continue to operate without the ability to even open their doors to the public?

Brickley’s tried, like many other businesses, to manage a call in, curbside pickup model. But the pent-up demand from Rhode Islander’s emerging from hibernation proved too much for the business. It became challenging to manage stock and staffing, phone lines were full, and the customer experience was not up to the expectations of the business. Serving a single cone of chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, with an extended wait time after ordering, just wasn’t sustainable. Brickley’s closed their doors to regroup, in search of a better way forward.

Luckily, a family friend was familiar with a local representative of e|tab Online Ordering. Brickley’s signed up and was installed the same day. Within two days, they re-opened their doors, with e|tab hand-in-hand, offering a new model to their customers. Brickley’s creative staff determined that a hand-packed-to-order quart’s only pickup model was the way to go. And in their first day of doing business with e|tab, processed 167 orders and close to $5000 in revenue. With a bit of tweaking here and there, the business continued to thrive using this model, all while maintaining social distancing, and keeping in line with local regulations.
